Sniff Test: With one whiff, customers are hooked on scented soy candles by PrismAura Candles.
Three years ago, Veronica Crosby and her sister were making candles for fun, when Crosby decided she wanted to start her own collection of scents. “I couldn’t find high quality candles at affordable prices, so I decided to make my own,” she said. Fast forward to today and you can find her ecologically sustainable soy candles at the PrismAura Candles tent at the Westchase District Farmers Market.
Crosby has enlisted the full-time help of her husband, Chris, and their friend Daniel Belcher to sell custom-scented candles at the market, with seasonal variations rotating in and out of her collection. “Right now, my spring fragrances are Florida Lemons, Strawberries and Cream, and Margarita,” she said. “My year-round best sellers are Vanilla Bean, Lavender and Egyptian Sauna.”
Using soy wax and essential oils, Crosby said her $15.00 candles last up to 72 hours, nearly three times the length of other name-brand candles of similar size. “Because of our wax, skin-safe fragrances and metal-free wicks, our candles don’t create black smoke, so you don’t have to clean your air filter or wipe down your house when you buy our candles,” she said.
Though she sells about 20 different fragrance varieties at any given time, Crosby said she has the ability to create hundreds of different kinds of scents and can even create custom fragrances. “I had a request to recreate the smell of a particular kind of room spray and I was able to get it just right,” she said. “Also, I can make votive candles for special occasions such as birthdays or weddings.”
It was no special occasion when Crosby and her husband discovered Westchase District Farmers Market. “We were just driving by one day and saw the signs for the market,” she said. “We looked at each other and said, ‘Hey! Maybe we could sell our candles there!’”
